Ascent to Končista 2537 m MSL

Končista is the 7th highest peak of the High Tatras and the western neighbor of Gerlach. It is located in the southern part of the main ridge of the High Tatras, which rises from Popradsky Ľadovy peak. The slopes of Končista fall from the east into the Batizovska valley, from the southwest into the Štôlska valley and the northwestern slopes into the Zlomiskova valley. Končista has 2 peaks, the lower north and the upper south, on which there was an interesting rock formation, Anvil, also named Jarmay’s table. Anvil lost its original shape in 2019, after a lightning strike, when part of it fell off the southern slope. For those who reach the top, Končistá offers views of the Batizovská valley, the Gerlachovsky peak massif, the Dračia and Mengusovska valleys.

The first recorded summer ascent to Končista took place in 1874, but it is assumed that even before that year there were ascents to the top.

The hike with a mountain leader has several options, but as a starting point it is used to use the Sliezky dom and usually descends to Popradské pleso, to the Mountain Hotel Popradské pleso.

The ascent to Končista can also be completed by a more demanding variant from the Zlomiskova valley with a mountain guide. Contact us for information about this tour.

Note: Part of the tour leads along the Tatra highway (to Batizovské pleso and the descent from the saddle below Ostrva). is one of the most beautiful in the Tatras, as there is a beautiful view from the top and the tourist can gain additional experience when moving off the marked trails.

Overview

The hike has 2 basic variants:

Variant 1.

The ascent begins at the Sliezsky dom (1670 m MSL), from where it continues around Batizovske pleso (1884 m above sea level), along a marked tourist trail to the foothills of Končista, where the trail is left and continues along the ridge to the very top of Končista. It descends to the west, towards Lúčne sedlle, from where it rises to another peak, Tupa peak (2285 m.n.m.), from which it descends to Sedlo pod Ostrvou (1984 m.n.m.) and a marked tourist path to Popradske pleso to the Popradske pleso Mountain Hotel. The tour ends at the Popradské pleso train-stop (1250 m MSL).

Variant 2.

The ascent begins at the Sliezsky dom (1670 m MSL), from where it continues around Batizovske pleso (1884 m above sea level), along a marked tourist trail to the foot of Končista, where the trail leaves and continues along the ridge to the very top of Končista. It descends a straight path and the hike ends at Slieszky dom (1670m MSL).
